Unlocking More Value in EV Charging: How Polarium’s BESS Empowers Recharge’s Network
At Polarium, we are dedicated to advancing the energy transition with flexible, intelligent Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Our recent collaboration with Recharge and FLEXECHARGE demonstrates how co-located BESS can create new value streams for public EV charging networks by enabling smarter integration, dynamic optimization, and scalable operations.
20th April, 2026The Challenge: Maximizing Value at Recharge Malmö with Polarium BESS
At Recharge’s high-power charging site in Malmö, the goal was to maximize the value of every installed system by deploying Polarium’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Integrating a new BESS into an existing charging network can be complex, as each supplier may use different protocols and control logic. To fully realize the potential of BESS at the Malmö site, it was essential that the system could support multiple applications—such as peak shaving, power boosting, arbitrage, and participation in flexibility markets. By enabling the Polarium BESS to serve several purposes, Recharge can optimize both operational efficiency and financial returns at this location.
The Solution: Seamless Integration with Polarium BESS
Thanks to FLEXECHARGE’s Energy Management Platform, Polarium’s BESS was integrated into Recharge’s charging network, ensuring stable connections and full control. The platform’s ability to standardize communication and abstract complex protocols enabled Recharge to fully utilize the advanced capabilities of Polarium’s BESS—delivering reliable performance, robust energy management, and future scalability at the Malmö site. Thanks to its intelligent functionality, Polarium’s BESS supports multiple applications, helping Recharge optimize operational efficiency and unlock new value streams from their charging infrastructure.
Smart Optimization for Maximum Value
Once connected, the optimization engine dynamically allocates each battery to the most valuable use case at any moment:
- Peak shaving to avoid costly grid peaks
- Power boosting for higher charging performance
- Arbitrage based on dynamic tariffs
- Ancillary services participation
- Grid-compliant curtailment when required
This multi-layer value stack maximizes the economic contribution of every Polarium BESS, while ensuring a stable charging experience for drivers.
The operational strategy has expanded to include peak shaving, where the battery actively supplies energy during high-demand periods to limit site consumption and reduce demand charges.
Based on recent site behaviour and tariff assumptions, Recharge expects peak shaving alone to deliver monthly savings in the range of ~3,000–8,000 SEK with an average around 5,500 SEK per month. These figures are indicative and depend on charging patterns, seasonality, and grid tariffs.
The Result: Future-Proof, Profitable Charging Networks
By combining Polarium’s flexible BESS with advanced energy management, Recharge can monetize multiple value streams, adapt to changing market conditions, and secure higher returns than with single-use battery deployments.
At Polarium, we’re proud to help the EV charging sector move from static infrastructure to dynamic, intelligent energy systems. Together, we’re building a more resilient, efficient, and profitable future for sustainable mobility.
