Polarium and inexogy partner to roll out smart metered BESS for value stacking in

Polarium is partnering with inexogy to roll out smart metering systems (iMSys) across its decentralized battery storage fleet in Germany. The first phase will digitally connect more than 1,600 battery storage systems into a Virtual Power Plant (VPP), unlocking their flexibility for the energy market — with the ambition to scale to up to 10,000 systems nationwide.

Flexibility has become a central pillar of Germany’s energy transition. As renewable generation expands and grid congestion increases, the need for flexible capacity that can be actively deployed, rather than simply held in reserve, is growing fast. At the same time, Germany’s legally mandated, nationwide rollout of smart metering systems is reshaping how energy assets are measured, controlled, and connected. Scaling that rollout is no small task: Germany’s grid is split across hundreds of regional distribution system operators, each with its own processes and timelines, which makes a coordinated, digital-first approach essential rather than optional.

The partnership between Polarium and inexogy sits at exactly this intersection, turning thousands of individual battery storage systems into a connected, intelligently controlled resource that benefits the grid, the market, and society at large. Concretely, the collaboration enables:

• Scalable rollout — a fully digital infrastructure built to scale thousands of battery storage systems nationwide
• Market flexibility — “capacity slicing” that lets storage capacity serve trading, resilience, and grid needs at the same time
• Resilience — dependable backup power for critical infrastructure, such as telecom networks
• Grid stability — real-time data and controllability that help ease congestion in Germany’s low-voltage grids

The collaboration between Polarium and inexogy is structured as a long-term operational partnership. Binding service-level agreements (SLAs) govern meter replacement and commissioning through 2029. Depending on the specifications of the relevant distribution system operator, switching processes can be completed within a few weeks. Financial terms of the partnership were not disclosed.
