The EU Batteries Regulation – driving sustainability and circular economy in the European battery industry
12th November, 2024The new EU Batteries Regulation, which will replace the EU Batteries Directive from 2006, aims to create a more sustainable European battery industry and support the EU’s climate neutrality goal for 2050. The regulation mandates uniform standards across all EU Member States, covering the entire battery lifecycle—from design to recycling—and ensuring harmonization throughout Europe.
The regulation lays down requirements on sustainability, safety, transparency and supply chain due diligence, as well as technical requirements related to the battery itself. It also establishes minimum requirements for extended producer responsibility and the collection and treatment of waste batteries.
This paper provides an overview of the key provisions in the EU Batteries Regulation and Polarium’s position and plan ahead.
