Driving the Future: Kempower and Polarium’s Partnership Powers Efficient EV Charging

Polarium’s extensive expertise in battery development, coupled with its key technological features, played a vital role in Kempower’s decision to form this partnership.

By integrating Polarium’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with Kempower’s charging infrastructure, the partnership aims to provide a reliable, seamless, and sustainable power distribution solution.

Introduction

In the rapidly evolving world of Electric Vehicles (EVs), Kempower stands out as a pioneer, designing and manufacturing reliable, user-friendly DC fast-charging solutions. With a vision to create the world’s most desired EV charging solutions for everyone, everywhere, Kempower caters to clients all around the world and across all e-mobility sectors, from electric cars and buses to marine applications. Their modular and scalable systems are designed by EV drivers for EV drivers, to ensure an unparalleled user experience.

The Challenge of Grid Constraints

As the number of EVs on the road continues to surge, the demand for efficient charging solutions increases accordingly. However, existing grid constraints present significant challenges, often leading to longer charging times and higher costs due to peak load charges. Kempower recognized these challenges early on and sought a solution that would not only meet current demands but also anticipate future needs.

“With the electrification of transport, we started to see grid being a constraint across the globe. This created a new need among our clients, leading us to investigate the possibilities of integrating our DC fast-charging solutions with energy storage systems,” says Bruno Moedim, Segment Owner, Energy Solutions, at Kempower.

The Power of Partnerships

Kempower decided to team up with Polarium. By integrating Polarium’s Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) with Kempower’s charging infrastructure, the partnership aims to provide a reliable, seamless, and sustainable power distribution solution. This integration minimizes peak loads and optimizes energy consumption, allowing Kempower’s chargers to support multiple vehicles without costly grid upgrades.

“The idea behind partnering with Polarium was to validate their BESS and the power boost technology. If the grid capacity is limited and our clients cannot provide more power to their charging plugs, the BESS kicks in and complements the grid capacity by supplementing the power to the DC chargers. This strategic solution ensures faster charging times for especially larger vehicles, while the dynamic power distribution delivers the right amount of power across all charging plugs,” says Bruno Moedim.

Adding to this, Polarium’s BESS provides new market opportunities in terms of buying and selling energy from the grid. The batteries can absorb cheap energy when electricity prices are low, to discharge it when prices are high. This not only reduces operational costs but also contributes to the provision of more renewable electricity within the grid.

Why Polarium?

The choice of Polarium was driven by the modular design of their BESS, making it capable of addressing the diverse challenges faced by Kempower’s clients.

“One key benefit with Polarium’s technology is that it can be scaled and tailored after each of our clients’ needs. Their BESS suits not only passenger vehicle charging hubs but heavy-duty vehicle cases such as buses and trucks as well,” says Bruno Moedim.

Polarium’s extensive expertise in battery development, coupled with its key technological features, played a vital role in Kempower’s decision to form this partnership. Notably, Polarium’s innovative approach to pre-wiring battery cabinets at the factory significantly reduces installation errors and enhances system reliability. Their state-of-the-art propagation protection system was also a crucial factor for Kempower, ensuring the highest standards of safety and performance.

“Our chargers need to be available all the time. It’s really troublesome if they don’t work, both for our clients and ourselves. We aim to have the highest uptime in the industry to maintain our commitment to delivering reliable charging solutions, and currently, it’s over 99 percent. With that said, we wanted to make sure that the BESS’s availability meets our standards. Polarium’s modular propagation protection system is a perfect fit in this regard,” says Bruno Moedim.

Driving the Future of E-Mobility

This partnership marks a significant step towards creating the world’s most desired DC fast-charging solutions, poised to transform transportation. By combining cutting-edge technology with strategic foresight, they are not only meeting today’s demands but are also paving the way for a more sustainable and efficient future in electric mobility.
