Polarium contributes to project with Telia and the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS): Supporting Energy Independence and Emergency Preparedness

6th December, 2024

Polarium, a leader in energy storage solutions, proudly announces its role in the Offgrid Roslagen project, sponsored by the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) installed at a Telia site. In collaboration with Powercell, Euromekanik, and Soltech, Polarium has managed to establish a system concept that extended the backup power capacity of a mobile base station from just a few hours to up to 110 days.

Modern mobile base stations typically rely on grid electricity, with diesel generators serving as conventional backup sources. The Offgrid Roslagen project addresses the urgent need for energy independence during extended outages by exploring hydrogen and advanced energy storage solutions to revolutionize emergency preparedness.

At a Telia mobile tower in Roslagen, a pioneering combination of solar panels, batteries, and hydrogen fuel cells is being tested. Polarium has supplied ten 100 Ah batteries and an interface unit connected to inverters, supporting autonomous operations and enabling on-site hydrogen production and storage.

“We all depend on a stable power supply to ensure a redundant and reliable connection. With society’s demands for accessibility and the current global situation, there is an increased need to power towers even during long outages. That’s why it’s crucial to explore ways to strengthen backup power capabilities. We are incredibly pleased with the insights this project has already provided. These could be decisive in developing robust and sustainable solutions to address today’s challenges and future-proof our network infrastructure. This had not been possible without funding from PTS, which enabled this collaboration,” says Staffan Åkesson, Network Director at Telia.

“We are honored to contribute to this transformative initiative. At Polarium, we are committed to empowering communities with smart, safe and sustainable energy storage solutions, ensuring they have reliable power when it’s needed most.” says Louis Masreliez, Key Account Manager at Polarium.

About the Offgrid Roslagen Project
The project is funded by PTS and conducted in collaboration with Telia at one of Telia’s mobile base stations. The installation of the new energy source will be followed by a test period of at least one year, with completion expected by December 2025. The project will evaluate factors such as outcomes, cost efficiency, technical challenges, and more. Polarium participates together with Euromekanik, Powercell and Soltech.

Polarium remains at the forefront of delivering innovative technologies that enhance energy resilience, ensuring preparedness for both present challenges and future needs.
